Dining table sizing principles

The right dining table fits the people who need to sit at it comfortably, leaves room for chairs to be pushed back, and leaves a clear path to walk around the room.

Formula used

Table length = seats per long side × 60 cm per person
Table width = 90 cm (standard)
Round: diameter = (seats × 60) / π
Min. room width = table width + (90 cm chair clearance × 2) + (90 cm walkway × 2)
Min. room length = table length + (90 cm chair clearance × 2) + (90 cm walkway × 2)

Worked examples

6 seats rectangular: 3 per side × 60 = 180 cm length, 90 cm width. Min. room = 450 × 540 cm.

4 seats round: diameter = (4 × 60) / π ≈ 76 cm, use 90 cm. Min. room ≈ 450 cm square.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size dining table do I need for 6 people?

A rectangular table for 6 is typically 150–180 cm × 90 cm. Allow 60 cm per person on the long sides. Add 90 cm chair clearance each side plus 90 cm walkway = minimum room 360 × 420 cm.

How much space do you need around a dining table?

Allow 90 cm between the table edge and the wall for chair pull-out. Add another 90 cm behind that for a comfortable walkway. Total 180 cm minimum per side.

Is a round or rectangular table better for small rooms?

Round tables are more space-efficient in square rooms because they have no corners. A round table for 6 needs ~120 cm diameter and a minimum room size of ~330 cm in both directions.

How many people can sit at a 180 cm table?

A 180 cm rectangular table seats 6 comfortably (3 on each long side). Add 2 end seats for 8 people at a squeeze.

What is the minimum dining room size for 8 people?

For 8 people at a 210 × 90 cm table, the minimum room size is approximately 390 × 450 cm including all clearances.
