Why sofa size relative to room size matters
An oversized sofa forces people to squeeze past it. An undersized sofa makes the room feel unfinished. The goal is a sofa that fills the seating wall visually while leaving easy movement paths on both sides.
Formula used
Maximum sofa width = Wall length β (90 cm walkway Γ 2)
Recommended sofa width = Wall length β 90 cm (45 cm each side)
Worked example
Room 4.2 m wide, sofa on width wall: Maximum sofa = 420 β 180 = 240 cm. A standard 3-seat sofa at 210 cm fits with 105 cm clearance each side.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much clearance should there be on each side of a sofa?
Allow a minimum of 90 cm (36 inches) on each side for a comfortable walkway. In tight spaces, 75 cm is workable but 90 cm is the design standard.
How far should a sofa be from the TV?
For a 55-inch 4K TV, the ideal distance is about 140β175 cm. The gap between the sofa and TV should be at least the sofa depth (β90 cm) plus a coffee table (β45 cm) plus walking space.
What is the standard sofa depth?
Most three-seat sofas are 85β100 cm deep (front to back). Deep-seat sofas can be 110β120 cm deep.
What is the minimum room size for a 3-seater sofa?
A standard 3-seater sofa is 190β220 cm wide. With 90 cm walkways each side, you need at least 370β400 cm of room width.
Can a large sofa work in a small room?
Yes, if it is the primary piece of furniture and walkways are kept clear. L-shaped sofas can actually define the seating zone effectively in smaller rooms.
