TV size vs. viewing distance science
The ideal viewing distance is where you can resolve the finest detail the display can show without eye strain. Too close and you see individual pixels; too far and you lose the detail the resolution provides.

Ideal distance = screen diagonal Γ resolution factor
4K: min 1.0Γ ideal 1.5Γ max 2.5Γ
1080p: min 1.5Γ ideal 2.0Γ max 3.0Γ
720p: min 2.0Γ ideal 2.5Γ max 3.5Γ
Worked examples
55-inch 4K TV: 55 in = 140 cm. Ideal distance = 140 Γ 1.5 = 210 cm.
Seating 3 m, 4K: Ideal TV = 300 / 1.5 = 200 cm = 79 inches β choose 75".
65-inch 1080p: 165 cm diagonal Γ 2.0 = 330 cm ideal.

Is 4K worth it if I sit far away?
4K becomes less noticeable beyond 2.5Γ the screen diagonal. At 3 m from a 55-inch 4K TV, your eye cannot fully resolve the extra pixels. Sitting closer β under 2Γ the diagonal β is where 4K makes a clear difference.
What TV size is right for a 3 m seating distance?
At 3 m (300 cm), for 4K the ideal screen size is 300/1.5 = 200 cm diagonal = 79 inches. Most people choose a 65β75 inch 4K TV as a practical compromise.
